Q:  What do you need to run Joho?

A:  Joho runs on desktop Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, and XP computers.  We recommend at least 64 Mbytes of RAM, a 15-inch monitor, a mouse, and a CD-ROM drive for software installation. Joho requires 256-color operation.  |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho run on a server?

A:  The Joho display system is designed for the desktop.  Its performance in a server environment depends on the details of that environment.  Joho’s Matrix Computation System, which performs computational tasks and image creation can be run on a server, which can then transfer output files to folders accessible from the desktop for display.  |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho get data from network drives?

A:  Joho on the desktop can use input files and create output files on any network accessible drive and folder.  |UP TO TOP|

Q:  How much storage does a Joho image require?

A:  Joho images are very small compared to the original data files.  This makes Joho an effective mechanism for archiving numerical information. The actual formula is

Size_in_Bytes = 2048 + (N X (Columns X Rows X Levels))

N = 1 for a displayable Joho image.  N = 4 for a floating point image used for calculations.   |UP TO TOP|

Q:  How much information can I show in a Joho image?

A:  This depends on the resolution you set in your display settings.  In practice about half of the screen will be used for the legend, titles, labels, and blank space.  Joho images can use one pixel on your screen for every number.  If you use 800x600 resolution you can see about 240,000 numbers.  If you use 1024x768 you can see about 400,000 numbers.  If you use 1280x1024 you can see about 650,000 numbers. Double these numbers if you forego the labels.  |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Does Joho implement Accessibility Standards?

A:  Yes.  All operations can be controlled through either the mouse or the keyboard.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What documentation is included with Joho?

A:  Joho includes a comprehensive User’s Guide that describes all of Joho’s operations.  It also includes example data files, and detailed instructions processing the example files.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What training is available?

A:  On-site training is available and priced according to the customer’s needs.  Unlimited telephone support and assistance is included in the maintenance price.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What does Joho cost?

A:  A single-user desktop license for the complete Joho system is $2,999.  Maintenance (bug-fixes and unlimited telephone support) is $400/year.  Multiple, site, and enterprise licenses are available.  Major upgrades will be priced according to the additional capabilities in the newer system.    |UP TO TOP|

Joho’s Capabilities

Q:  Can you distribute Joho images on the web?

A:  In order to use Joho’s interactive features (reading out values, dynamic color changes) you must be using an installed copy of Joho.  However, Joho creates highly compressed PNG versions of the screen images (and thumbnails).  You can store these PNG images in a folder that is accessed by web pages. Most browsers display PNG images.   Joho can create batch scripts to create PNG versions many images without user intervention.      |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Does Joho print images?

A:  Yes.  Double clicking a Joho image opens the standard Windows printer dialog.  In addition, Joho can create batch scripts to display and print many images without user intervention.     |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can users view Joho images without installing Joho?

A:  Users can view the static PNG versions of Joho images with any browser and many viewer programs.  The user needs Joho in order to interact with the images.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho create images automatically?

A:  Joho remembers all of your image creation and manipulation operations in script files that it can use for repetitive, independent operations.  For example, Joho could automatically read a daily updated data file, create an updated image, convert it to a PNG version, and place it in a web accessible folder to update a web site with new images without user intervention.   Joho scripts can be combined with simple batch files to automate complex tasks.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho archive data?

A:  Joho can keep all of its working files for a project in a single folder.  Saving this folder to secondary storage is very practical.  Because Joho images, and the scripts to display them are very small, saving numerical data in Joho format can provide a significant reduction in the necessary storage capacity.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho combine images mathematically?

A:  Yes.  Joho includes a variety of mathematical functions to manipulate Joho images after it creates them from original data files.  For example Joho makes it trivial to compute changes or percentage changes from one image to the next, without having to manipulate data in the original file or database.     |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho images be used in PowerPoint and other programs?

A:  Joho’s PNG format images can be inserted into most Windows image compatible programs.      |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Does Joho perform statistical analysis?

A:  Statistical analysis is often performed because there is no practical way to view large data sets.  Joho breaks this barrier by showing all of the original data, its trends, and its anomalies.  In cases where statistical analysis is still required, Joho is an excellent tool for verifying the data quality and for showing what analysis is appropriate for the data.     |UP TO TOP|

Using Joho

Q:  How do you get data into Joho?

A:  Joho includes a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet reader that converts spreadsheets directly into Joho images that include column and row labels and titles. It also includes an Excel macro that creates images from spreadsheets where assumptions in 2 or 3 cells can vary.   Joho also includes a very flexible text file reader program that can read most ASCII data files that can be generated from standard database queries.     |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What if we need special software to read our data into Joho?

A:  Joho’s Matrix Computation System is extensible by American Image programmers.  If you have existing data files that are not readable with existing Joho programs, we can quote the price of added functionality for your site’s version of Joho  |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can Joho remember where my data is located?

A:  Joho’s project profiles include paths to five different folders and extensions for fifteen different file types. The user can set these and store them in a named profile that Joho remembers from one session to the next.  Joho supports up to 100 named profiles.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What kinds of information can Joho display?

A:  Joho displays two- and three-dimensional grids of numerical information.  The values in the grid cells must all measure the same quantity.  This is similar to the restriction of a graph where each point in the graph is measuring the same quantity as shown on the Y-axis. The sameness of the cells is the only restriction.  The actual meaning of the cell values is arbitrary, and contained in the labels and other annotations. The examples on this web site show some of Joho’s flexibility.      |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can you read numerical values from a Joho image?

A:  Clicking any cell in the image displays the column, row, and level locations and labels, a cell label, and the cell value.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  Can I change the layout of Joho images?

A:  Joho displays matrix files using a small text display script.  By default, the layout is retrieved from the current project profile.  The user adjusts the layout (image size, legend position, title positions and fonts, etc.) by dragging the components on a layout template screen.  Changes in the current layout template show up whenever Joho displays an image, and are stored permanently in the named profile for future use.   |UP TO TOP|

Joho supports up to 100 named profiles. This makes it possible to have different layouts for different projects.

Once an image layout is defined, the user can make the display script permanent so that further changes to the profile will not affect that version of the displayed image.

Q:  Can I create my own color palettes for Joho images?

A:  We can supply an Excel spreadsheet that someone who is used to using formulae in Excel can use to make new .PRN files for Joho palettes.  A new mouse-driven palette creator is in development. American Image will work with customers to make sure their palette needs are satisfied.    |UP TO TOP|

Q:  What if I’m colorblind?

A:  We recognize that Joho’s standard palettes may not be appropriate for colorblind customers.  We will work with these customers to develop palettes that are appropriate for their particular colorblind characteristics.     |UP TO TOP|
